The Star-Spangled Banner ...

The Star-Spangled Banner ...

It was dark time when Francis Scott Key penned the immortal words to what became our national anthem.  We were at war with the British, again, in the War of 1812.  The Brits had burned the White House to the ground.  We'd had some victories at sea, notably by the USS Constitution (still at anchor in Boston).  The greatest victory of the war came after the war was over: Andy "By-God" Jackson's victory over the British in the Battle of New Orleans.   Today, very few people know that our

Corresponding with a President ...

I was a child in the 1950's.  Both of my parents were Republicans, and though I didn't know what that meant, I did see that kindly, grandfatherly old President on the TV (my father ALWAYS  watched the news), and I came to know Richard Milhaus Nixon.  I voted for him in my first election (I had to wait until 1972, which irritated me to no end ... they lowered the voting age, that year).  I was certain that America was in good hands, afterwards.   Several years later ... after Watergate

Easter is Forever ... Jesus is Alive

Easter is Forever ... Jesus is Alive

So much has been written, and talked about on television, about the unique nature of Easter 2020.  Our churches will be empty, restaurants closed, egg hunts cancelled, even our family gatherings will be virtual (if we are able to get together at all).  The consensus seems to be that Easter will not be the same.   BUT, I would like to point out that Easter will be exactly the same!  Our celebrations and observances will differ greatly from what we have come to expect and experience.  Bu

My Mosin is an Assault Rifle? I don't think so ...

Since I bought my Mosin-Nagant, before Obama banned their importation, I've done one heckuva lot of modifications to it ...   I started with an Archangel polymer stock, and added a Timney trigger (I asked the gunsmith at the factory to keep the trigger pull at no more than 1 pound of pull ... heck, you breathe on the thing and it triggers).  One reason to buy the Archangel stock is that it is designed to accept the Timney trigger housing, which comes with a modern safety.  Those who kn

Obama Actually Did Something for Me!

Obama Actually Did Something for Me!

Obama actually did something good for me!   He decided that he was going to ban the importation of a number of military-surplus rifles from other countries.  Of course, he wanted to cut down on gun violence on America's streets (if he wanted to do that, he could simply ban American-made Saturday Night Specials, which are a favorite of the inner city gangs).   Just before he had done this, I bought a 1929 Russian Mosin-Nagant, for a total of $75 bucks.  Though the rifle is old

A Fun Way to enter Vietnam

A Fun Way to enter Vietnam

It's 1968, and we're flying in a C-130 towards the coast of Vietnam.  The colonel stands up and announces in a loud voice, "We're headed for Camp Evans.  I want parachutes on.  This will probably be the last time any one of you will make a paradrop. so enjoy!  I should tell you that we'll be jumping at 500 feet. Any questions?"   A squeaky voice sounds off, "But sir, we need at least 1000 feet for our chutes to open."   The colonel replied, "We'll be going in at 200 knots, so
