Korryn Gaines Decided To Shoot It Out With Police A Week Ago

Recommended Posts

We’re now getting more information about the life and death of Korryn Gaines, a Randallstown (MD) mother with a history of bizarre behavior, bad decision-making, and an irrational hatred of law enforcement.

Gaines was shot after a nearly seven-hour standoff that saw her take her own five-year-old son hostage and use him as a human shield against police officers as she repeatedly pointed a shotgun towards police, finally prompting an exchange of gunfire that saw her killed and her son wounded.

Warrant service officers were dispatched to Carriage Hill apartments in Randallstown Monday at 9:20 AM to serve warrants on Gaines and her live-in boyfriend, Kareem Kiean Courtney.

Courtney’s warrant was for domestic violence against Gaines.

Gains had numerous warrants including resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and numerous traffic infractions for a traffic stop in March that she recorded.

Gaines did not have a license plate on her vehicle, just a piece of cardboard which read:

“Any government official who compromises this pursuit to happiness and right to travel, will be held criminally responsible and fined, as this is a natural right and freedom.”

Gaines had adopted the political rhetoric and penchant for law-breaking of sovereign citizens (like the domestic terrorist who carried out the Dallas Police Black Live Matter ambush), and it predictably did not impress the police.

Gaines escalated the traffic stop to an absurd degree, telling officers that they were going to have to “murder” her and “carry her out in a body bag.” As she was being arrested and her kids (five and one) taken into protective custody, she even screamed for the five-year-old to bite police.

Gaines then refuses to show up for her court date, and prompted the warrant for her arrest.

Gates planned to shoot it out with police

Gaines knew that there would be warrants issued both for her failure to appear on multiple charges and for the domestic violence charge against Courtney, and she seemed to have made up her mind on how to respond more than a week ago with a bizarre Instagram post of her loading a shotgun, thanking her father for teaching her “how to protect herself,” and “who to protect herself from.”

Gaines make it obvious that she’s referring to police when she notes that she purchased her pistol-grip, pump-action 12-gauge shotgun (“Big Girl”) before “they threw me charge” (arrested her) and she became a prohibited person. Gaines further noted that she bought her shotgun as protection against other another black person (“Thought i was gon have to take out a nigga”), but it’s impossible to tell if she meant a specific individual (perhaps her violent life-in boyfriend Courtney?) or the generalized threat of black-on-black crime.

She concludes by alluding to “a bigger problem” (the police she knows will be coming to serve warrants) and then suggests she intends to fight them (“Fuck it Let’s dance, i got some rhythm”).

Here’s the Instagram post, duplicated here in case Instagram or someone else now responsible for Gaines account decides to remove it.

When warrant officers arrived and finally made entry after obtaining an apartment key from the landlord, they encountered Gaines holding her five-year-old son and pointing a shotgun at them.

Mr. Courtney grabbed the one-year-old child he had with Gaines (the five-year-old was from a previous relationship) and fled the apartment.

It will be very interesting to see what he reveals about the ten-minute conversation he had with Gaines before police opened the door and he fled with their youngest child to safety (and police custody). He was later released that same day on his own recognizance.

Between the beginning of the standoff after 9:20 AM and concluding with a shootout at nearly 4:00 PM (earlier media accounts suggested 3:00 PM), Gaines barricaded herself in the back of the apartment and pointed her shotgun at officers repeatedly, her five-year-old child held as an unwitting hostage and human shield.

Gaines even sent the child out of her barricaded position to film video of a tactical officer who was watching their position from a doorway, his muzzle down.

Gaines eventually pointed her shotgun at officers one time too many.

According to authorities, at approximately 4:00 PM, Korryn Gaines threatened to murder officers if they did not leave, and raised her shotgun against them. An officer fired and missed. Gaines responded by firing a shot, re-racking the shotgun’s slide, and firing again.

Officers then returned fire, killing her.

Her five-year-old was wounded in arm the exchange of gunfire, but is listed in good condition at a Baltimore area hospital.

Korryn Gaines seems to have clearly decided well in advance of Monday that she was going to use lethal force against police officers.

Someone is so intent on causing harm that they are willing to put her own child at risk can’t be reasoned with.

Korryn Gaines wanted to engage police in a lethal battle, and she got her wish.
