Are-You-Pandemic-Ready-BDS-225x300.jpg

Do you ever have times when you need to call in some help from your friends? Here at Backdoor Survival Land this is one of those weeks. Shelly and I have been rehearsing like crazy for a local musical production and this is show week. After weeks of rehearsals, we have five performances and time is precious.

So, to help me out, Ken McClelland, author of The Pandemic Preparedness Guide, has stepped in and offered up two more copies of his book in a special Survival Buzz bonus giveaway. With the latest woes caused by the Zika virus, I would say that his timing is good.

Some of you might recall “The Pandemic Preparedness Guide” from the recently concluded Prepper Book Festival 10. What I said at the time was:

Whereas the next book up is titled
, the reality is that this book is a whole lot more.

It is a handbook of the precautions and preparations you need to put in place to ensure your health and survival to both medical and non-medical to what I call
. These are situations where for one reason or another, normal life as we know it stops and a new reality begins. Whether permanent or temporary, these disruptions cause us to turn to our preps (skills and stuff) in order to make it through, one day at a time.

News Flash! Articles from Around the Web

I started out by saying that I called in some help from my friends this week. So here is the deal. For the last month or so, I have been sharing news from around the web – usually 3 or 4 tidbits of news items I found either interesting, useful,or both.

It occurred to me that my friend, Daisy Luther, was already posting a weekly roundup of news over on her website. She does such a good job of it that I asked her if I could piggy back to her work and she agreed. You can click on the banner below then jump to “This Week in Preparedness”. Note that “Survival Saturday” typically posts at around 10AM Pacific.

Be sure to let me know what you think.

Prepare Your Family for Survival: Tip #4

Here is this week’s prep tip from Linda Loosli’s recently published a book,

Prepare Your Family For Survival. This week’s tip is from “Chapter 4 – Lights Out: Surviving in the Dark”

Tip: If you take medications that need to be refrigerated, consider buying a small refrigerator like those used on boats that you can plug into your car, run on a stand-alone battery, or that uses solar power.

Update on Emergency Essentials

I have been having a number of conversations with the folks at Emergency Essentials, including a key member of their executive team. I am happy to report that they have stepped up and taken steps to overhaul the customer service experience for online customers. This is good news for all of us!

Within the next week or two, I will be sharing an interview with the EE Director of Operations, plus, will be giving you news of special promotion unique to Backdoor Survival readers. Also, they asked that I remind you to always start your shopping session with a link from this website. This is especially important if you are a repeat customer and receive their emails. That is the only way they can track orders from Backdoor Survival readers.

Note: I do receive a small commission on your orders which makes this a great way to support my efforts in maintain the blog.

So, for now, Emergency Essentials is back on the recommended list. This should be good news for those of you that have depended upon their online store for your preparedness purchases.

The Final Word

Although I did not mention it at the onset, giving yourself permission to ask for a helping hand is something we all need to do from time to time. No one is a superman or superwoman and in spite of our best efforts, sometimes we can not be everywhere doing everything at every moment. I am trying to put some balance back in my life, and if it means that I need to call in my pals to help with the website, so be it.

When you think about it, reaching out and asking for help now is good practice for when and if the stuff hits the fan. It is my opinion that if we try to do it all and cope totally on our own, we will crash and burn. There is no doubt in my mind about that.

As far as I am concerned, it is okay to be needy once in awhile; just not all of the time.

Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

Gaye

10 Pack Mini LED Flashlightsir?t=bds2016-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B009WJR89Q: What a great deal on 10 mini flashlights on a key ring - button batteries included. I happen to like a more sturdy ring so I remove the one that comes with and use a small bit of tie-wrap (zip tie) instead. The included battery seemingly lasts forever and at this price, you can stash them in the car, purse, pocket, tool box and by the circuit breaker box, and still have some left over for other uses.

As of this writing, all 10 are under $4.00 in in black although from time to time they are available in colors as well.. Shipping is free.

Bargain Bin: When it comes to emergency lighting, there are many choices at all sorts of price points. Here are some of my favorites.

TaoTronics-Collapsible-Lantern-250.jpg

TaoTronics Collapsible Lantern: This TaoTronics Lantern is collapsible, super bright, and water resistant. It is powered by 3 AAA batteries that will provide brightness for 40 hours. To use this lantern, just pull it open; there are no power switches to mess with. Currently $9.99.

UltraFire Mini Cree LED Flashlightir?t=bds2016-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B006E0QAFY: At the time of this writing, this one is only $3.05 with free shipping. It is super mini sized, bright and waterproof. Plus, it uses a single, standard AA sized battery.

Dorcy LED Wireless Motion Sensor Flood Lite: This light is awesome. I use mine downstairs as well as on my stairway and when I get up in the middle of the night, they come on automatically. They are quite unobtrusive and give off a ton of light. Runs for a year on 3 D size batteries. As of this writing, only $14.75 with free Prime Shipping.

Blocklite Ultra Bright 9V 6 LED Flashlight: I own six of these little gems. There is a similar flashlight called the Pak-Lite (which is more expensive) but it does not have a high-low switch like this one. These little flashlights just go and go, plus, they make good use of those re-purposed 9V alkaline batteries that you have recharged with your Maximal Power FC999 Universal Battery Charger.

4 Inch Premium Glow Sticks – Assortedir?t=bds2016-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B005WMDD00: These 4” glow sticks are fantastic! Each stick glows for 8-12 hours, and comes with a pre-attached hook and lanyard. They are well priced and hold up well when packed around in a pocket or handbag. Coast HP1 Focusing LED Flashlightir?t=bds2016-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00IEMUOWU: Yes, at $10 this flashlight is more expensive than some of the MiniCrees out there. On the other hand, it is a bit slimmer and lighter. Where it really excels though is in brightness and range. I actually prefer it and carry it with me when venturing out at night.
