Connecticut - The First Company, Governor's Horse Guards

The First Company Governor's Horse Guards was organized in 1778 and chartered by the state of Connecticut in 1788. It is the oldest continuously active mounted cavalry unit in the United States. Today the 1GHG trains at their facilities in Avon, Ct, where the troop has been located since 1954. The members are all unpaid volunteers who train in the U.S. Cavalry tradition. Our horses are not purchased by the state. Instead they are donated to the Troop. The troop pays a portion of it's operating expenses through their non-profit organization, The friends of the First Company Governor's Horse Guards.
