Nero Fiddled… And Then He Got Shot

The Roman emperor Nero is said to have fiddled while Rome burned in 64 AD, an impressive feat considering that the fiddle wasn’t developed for another eight centuries.

Perhaps if Pleasant Grove (TX) burglar James Nero hadn’t been “fiddling around” during a Saturday morning burglary he wouldn’t have been “burned” by a resident who heard glass break and went to go investigate the sound with a gun in his hand.

A man who was trying to break into a home in Pleasant Grove was shot by the resident Saturday, police said.

James Nero, 30, broke into a house in the 1000 block of Burlywood Drive around 11:20 a.m., police said.

After hearing glass break, the resident found Nero standing inside, according to police. The man, whom police did not name, then shot at Nero.

Nero fled and was later arrested. He told police that he tried to burglarize the man’s home.

Nero was treated for a gunshot wound at a nearby hospital and booked into the Dallas County Jail on a charge of burglary of a habitation. He remains in jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

James Nero is off the street, and is likely to stay in jail until his trial and more than likely automatic conviction, since he so willingly confessed his crime to police.

The home owner is not expected to face any charges in the incident.
