A total of 2,561,281 gun-related background checks were processed last month, setting an all-time record for the month of November and showing a swift increase from the 2.2 million checks performed in October.

2016 remains steady on it’s way to breaking last year’s record of 23 million background checks in the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System on gun purchases. So far this year, the FBI has processed over 24.7 million checks.

“Reports of the industry’s demise were greatly exaggerated by the liberal anti-gun media,” said Larry Keane, senior Vice President of the National Shooting Sports Foundation in response to the continued uptick in gun sales following November 8th’s presidential election.

“I’m not surprised by this being a huge year for gun sales because of Obama’s disdain for gun rights and threats of more gun control over the years,” said Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. “But, part of that sales record is also the threat of terrorism, actual acts of terrorism on American soil, rising racial violence, riots and violence because of political hatred, and even attacks on police.”

“These statistics represent the number of firearm background checks initiated through the NICS,” the FBI said. “They do not represent the number of firearms sold. Based on varying state laws and purchase scenarios, a one-to-one correlation cannot be made between a firearm background check and a firearm sale.”

If consumers continue to follow annual trends, the uptick in gun sales in the month of December will push the 2016 totals far past everyone’s expectations and break the all-time record for the month of December.
