First handgun should be purchased as soon as able to own one.  It should be a decent / good quality budget gun that is small enough that you will carry it regularly.  Once you get there, then you can save up for "higher quality" more expensive or other types of guns.  Just get armed with something that works reliably and you will have on you ASAP.  Then start building your collection up while stocking up on extra magazines and ammo.
