The University of Houston Police Department needs rifles. It has decided to stay local in fulfilling that need, selecting Houston-based Battle Rifle Company as its provider of long guns. As part of that deal, the company has delivered ten of its BR4 Spartan rifles to the department. These rifles are to be used by officers on patrol throughout campus.

Described by the company as its workhorse rifle, the BR4 Spartan is available in 5.56mm, 6.8mm and 7.62×39. It features flip-up rear sights; Aimpoint Pro red dot sights with co-witness mounts; Ergo pistol grip; Streamlight weapons lights and single point slings. In addition, these semi-auto rifles boast upgraded ALG trigger sets. The BR4 is Battle Rifle Company’s upgraded version of the M4 carbine. Users have a choice of a 14.5/16-inch HBAR profile, or a 16-inch SOCOM profile.

The University of Houston was established in 1927. Described in Battle Rifle Company’s press release as a “sprawling metropolis” and a “small city,” the university consists of over 45,000 students and faculty. A campus population that large requires a police force, which the university has had for some time. There are currently over 70 sworn officers in the University of Houston Police Department.
