Just yesterday Tactical-Life reported that Barrett’s MRAD won the coveted U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Advanced Sniper Contract. Meanwhile, Barrett just released more info to Tactical-Life, including caliber information and comments from two proud Barretts, Ronnie and Chris.

Firstly, the U.S. Department of Defense announced the award on Monday. Moreover, Barrett announced in a press release the  MRAD (Multi-Role Adaptive Design) Rifle as the new Advanced Sniper Rifle in support of USSOCOM.

USSOCOM announced in 2016 they were in search of a modular, multi-caliber bolt action sniper rifle capable of converting between 7.62x51mm, .300 Norma Magnum (NM) and .338 Norma Magnum (NM) through a “full and open competition.” Further, the Barrett MRAD is designed with precision and modularity in mind and will serve the U.S. special operations teams in their efforts, according to Barrett.

“I remember Chris telling me that ‘this is what all precision rifles will look like one day!’ and he was right, said Ronnie Barrett, Founder and CEO. “However, aesthetics is not all that makes this rifle; as his development persisted, he was able to achieve more than I ever thought possible. I genuinely believe this is the most accurate rifle in the world.”

There has never been a time in US History that both a father and son have each fielded a military-designated rifle system until now: Ronnie with the M107 and Chris with the MRAD, according to Barrett.

“This feels like the highest honor I could ever achieve professionally to have a rifle adopted by the US Military, and especially USSOCOM,” said Chris Barrett, President.

Barrett MRAD Features

The Barrett MRAD rifle system utilizes a monolithic upper receiver machined from 7000-series aluminum. A full-length Picatinny rail provides generous mounting surface for both day and night optics. Also, the rail features built-in taper in keeping with the rifle’s intended role of long-range engagement. Further, Barrett placed additional accessory mounting surfaces at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions.

Arguably the biggest highlight of the MRAD platform is the system’s barrel interchangeability. After loosening only two bolts via a standard Torx wrench, the user can then change between several different calibers or barrel lengths. Additionally, MRAD chamberings include .338 Lapua Magnum, .338 Norma Mag., .300 Norma Mag., .300 PRC, .300 Win. Mag., .308 Win., 7mm Rem. Mag., 6.5 Creedmoor and .260 Rem. Also, barrel lengths include 17, 20, 22, 24 and 26 inches.
