I knew this was the real $#!+ as soon as I realized that everyone everywhere was out of N95 / P100 masks almost 2 months ago and they are still all out.  This has never happened before in my lifetime.  This is a strong clue that this is much worse than the governments are letting on.  Who do you think bought most of the masks up?  The government that's who.  They are stockpiling them and also sending them to hot spots around the world trying to contain this.  The government has the power to force manufacturer's to sell all of their stock to them in emergencies and that is exactly what has happened with all the disposable respirators that were available and are still being made but not making it to the retail shelves.

 

This is what comes up when you click on every N95 or P100 mask listed and it has been this way for almost 2 months.  It's the same for any other online retailer not just Grainger.  Do you think they just stopped making them?  No they are all going to the governments as they are made and shipped out.

i am just worried they will use this as a way to try and kick a critical hit on us and blame it on the virus or use that as an excuse. Like arresting militia leaders and say it was because we wouldn't let a quarantine go unimpeded.

It's possible it could be used as an excuse to implement martial law.

By the way, reusable half mask respirators are almost all completely sold out now in addition to the disposable paper respirators that have been out for over a month.

There's a site called 'LibraryThing', which I'm a member of. It's mainly about books, and for people who are book-lovers. But it also has a discussion forums section, including one called 'Pro and Con', where Lefties and Righties duke it out. Or used to ... it's been dormant for several years. But I just noticed that one of the members has started a thread (two, actually) on COVID-19  (the 'Wuhan Virus' as we should call it), with various people from Left and Right contributing, which has a lot of useful technical information on it. Almost all the posts have some valuable information. A couple of Lefties get in a whine against Trump, but just ignore them.

I am skeptical about the 'engineered for biowar' thesis, and I hope we don't nail our flag to the mast on this idea, and then end up looking stupid (as if anyone cares what we think, at the moment -- but it's a question of building long-term authority in the community).

 

It's possible that this virus has the sinister origins some people have attributed to it. But every conspiracy nutter on the planet, many of them completely scientifically illiterate, is going   to jump with all four feet on this, blaming it on the usual suspects. Let's not be associated with them. 

 

The key idea is that this outbreak

(1) proves once again that we have no reason to have blind faith in the gubmint, even one not run by Leftists

(2) the 'Golden Age' America has lived through may be coming to an end -- turbulent times may be ahead,

(3) in times of social stress, the rules  of normal polite society break down -- if people fight each other over a shortage of toilet paper, what will they do over a shortage of food?

(4)  If the government cannot protect us from a viral outbreak, of whatever origin, can we trust it to protect us from an  outbreak of human viruses   -- looters and people who have no emotional loyalty to the country they're in at the moment but who will seek an opportunity to enrich themselves at the expense of others?

 

The conclusion: be sensible and prepare in advance for times of stress.  A few hundred dollars spent intelligently, a few hours of your time, can make a huge difference in a situation when the rulebook has been torn up. So far, this is just standard 'survivalism' and 'prepper' wisdom.

 

But most importantly, those who survive best are those who are organized best, and, in our world, that also means those who have the means to protect themselves and maintain the social order.... which means that far-sighted patriots should join, or at least support, a local militia group. Like it or not, the people with the guns will set the rules, so we want to be sure we are those people. And this means being organized, disciplined, trained, and prepared.

 

Every militia unit that has the capacity to generate publicity ought to be making this point in a firm, low-key but insistent way. It should look for opportunities in the developing crisis to become another -- not a rival -- center of authority and support in the local community.  If it has the human and technical resources -- people with medical training, transport, the ability to provide security if necessary -- it should offer these to the appropriate authorities, and to local churches or other organizations.

 

And at some point, after the crisis has passed, it should organize a public meeting along the lines of 'Lessons from Corona -- Preparing for the Next Crisis'.

A world wide pandemic is one of the most likely SHTF scenarios outside of severe weather or other severe acts of mother nature.  If you are a prepper these are the situations that should be prepared for first.  Then you should be as good to go as you possibly can for a situation like this.  If you aren't a prepper, maybe you should start considering becoming one.  The US government in general and FEMA recommend that families have 6 months worth of supplies to get them through times of extreme emergencies when the government emergency systems are over loaded.  I think if nothing else this is a wake up call if you aren't ready.  The militia is self supplied and self sufficient and goes hand in hand with prepping as far as I'm concerned.

Absolutely.

 

In normal times, our normal arrangements take care of life's little challenges -- keeping healthy, getting enough to eat, keeping the criminals and foreign foes at bay. The average citizen can get about his or her daily life. Your taxes and shopping money will take care of these things.

 

But history teaches us that, from time time, we get a historic Black Swan. Contradictions that have been slowly building up burst out. Normality vanishes.  The food runs out. It turns out the government was asleep at the switch.  The police don't want to committ suicide by confronting an armed mob.

 

The idea of a citizens' militia, based in the local community, is just one of a range of ways-of-being-prepared-for-Black-Swans that an intelligent person will want to support.

 

There are other considerations in favor of a militia as well -- the same ones that favor the idea of the armed citizen.

 

A serious force of organized armed citizens keeps certain people from thinking that they can do just anything to us, so long as their billions can hire enough lobbyists and buy enough 'elected representatives' and pass a law.  But we don't need to stress that side of things right now.
