Leadership 101: WINNING--OR AT LEAST FIGHTING--THE PROPAGANDA WAR

Recommended Posts

Today is Day Five of the twenty-day "Leadership 101" series I'll be posting. This series expresses my thoughts on some topics important to the successful leadership of a local unit, and asks other unit leaders to post their thoughts, ideas, and experiences on the same subject in hopes that together we can help those who are starting from scratch with unit-building.

Today's topic is "Winning, or at least fighting, the propaganda war".

Life is full of ugly truths, and in the Militia those truths are even more ugly than usual. We're a right-leaning organization overall, which these days is automatically on the wrong side of the massive propaganda machine we call "The American Media". Even FoxNews, the network that was built to counter all of that (and did so successfully for years) has been taken over and de-legitimized by the Left. Nowadays, the only accurate reporting for anyone who leans even slightly right of center comes from our own selves. Everyone else is generally "one of them".

What does that mean for you and your organization? Well ask yourself how this would be reported...one of your members, a silver star winner who has a concealed carry permit, works for the Red Cross, and serves Thanksgiving meals to the homeless every year, is driving his brand new pickup when he sees a bus full of schoolchildren that has lost it's brakes and is speeding toward a sharp curve with a steep cliff on the other side. Without regard to himself or his new truck, he muscles that Hemi ahead of the bus, lets it hit him, then slows both down enough that when the curve is reached only his truck is crunched into the guard rail. It's a complete loss, but everyone survives.

You know as well as I do that MSNBC is going to report that a "Gun-carrying right-wing Militiaman ran his truck into a bus full of children. Luckily, no one was injured. Police are investigating."

CNN will be worse; "Far-right whacko, reportedly suffering PTSD from his days killing innocent Afghanis, terrorized a busload of schoolchildren, at one point racing alongside of the bus and (according to unnamed sources) waved his fully semi-automatic weapon at them, before finally attempting to run them off the road with his pickup. But for the quick action of the busdriver, a lifelong Democrat who once ran unsuccessfully for city council in the majority-white neighborhood, who knows how many of the children would have died? Despite calls from state and federal leaders, including Al Sharpton, local police have refused to arrest the man (who has known ties to a white supremacist group identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as "the XYZ Militia"). Black Lives Matter has already scheduled a peaceful protest for the downtown area on Monday, to demand the arrest and prosecution of the man for 33 counts of attempted murder." They'll say all of this while the cameraman focuses in on the Trump sticker attached to the back bumper of the smashed pickup.

And America will eat it up. The man will be doxxed to within an inch of his life, his wife will receive death threats for weeks, his kids will be afraid to leave the house, and when FoxNews finally invites him on to tell the real story, Donna Brazille will call him a damned liar on national television and will get away with it.

Tell me this isn't exactly how it would play out?

This is the world we live in, and EVERYONE is subject to it. Now, add our status as right-wing Militia members--starting to see what we're up against?

I can tell you now this is a battle we're never going to win. This isn't a case of the deck stacked against us; it's that the only people holding the cards are the ones holding the microphones, and they're not even going to deal us in.

We're never going to win the propaganda war nationally, which means we have to have ABSOLUTE CONTROL OF THE NARRATIVE LOCALLY. The only way we win the hearts and minds of the people we are to serve, and from whom we gain all legitimacy and support, is to be absolutely up front and above board with them, in everything we do. While CNN paints us to look like crazed gun-toting lunatics who run busloads of schoolchildren off the road for kicks, our neighbors will know better and will see right through CNN if the time ever comes that we wind up in the national spotlight. That's the only kind of vaccine that works against the virus known as "fake news".

But that vaccine only works for us if we take it to the people we serve and inoculate them against the disease. We do that in several ways.

First, we stop shooting ourselves in the foot. If you're racist, you have no business in the Militia (and frankly, many of us believe you have no business breathing). You most CERTAINLY have no business opening your mouth, especially while representing our group. Shut the fuck up. And if you're in a unit with someone who carries these beliefs and won't shut up, it's up to you to either get rid of him or find a way to make him shut the fuck up. Because here's a simple truth--it won't be him who pays for his stupidity, it will be your kids. Guilt by association is a very real thing. Get used to it.

But what if you aren't racist? Then you'd better be damned sure not to give the impression that you are. This misguided idea that we have to stand for our freedoms by demonstrating them is suicidal. Yes, I get that you have a right to celebrate your "Southern Heritage" by waving a giant Confederate flag whenever and wherever you please...but please don't. Because let's be realistic--you aren't waving it for southern heritage at all; you're waving it to piss people off, and it works. You're waving it to prove that you can.

Guess what? The people burning the American flag are doing it to piss people off, and to prove that they can. Every time I see it I want to punch someone in the mouth--and that's exactly the reaction they're trying to provoke.

So are you, with your Confederate flag. This is second-grader mentality of the worst kind. You might as well load the gun for CNN and put it in Don Lemon's hand. While you're at it, paint a target on your forehead and on the foreheads of every Militia "brother" you claim to have, because that's what your do-whatever-you-want mentality is doing. As far as I'm concerned, you have the right to carry a bazooka to the school play, but it's a fucking stupid thing to do, and serves no legitimate purpose. Waving your Stars and Bars at every Militia event (or while you're representing the Militia in any way) is equally stupid and pointless. If you want to win the hearts of those in your community (and you must), put that shit away.

You have the right. You also have the right to go to the park every day and preach about the end of the world. But nobody is going to pay attention to you (at least not good attention) if you do either one. Just because you have a right doesn't mean you must exercise it, particularly when doing so does more harm than good.

There's more to controlling the narrative than just protecting your image. You also have to project your image. In other words, be proactive in the effort to show, and sow, goodwill within your community. If you or your unit is going to be serving Thanksgiving meals to the homeless, there is nothing at all wrong with making the local paper aware and having them send a photographer. Or, if they won't, bring your own. Take pictures, get the names of everyone in them, and create a little "news release". Do this for anything and everything positive you do for your community. This is how you build a bulletproof reputation. Self-promotion seems sleazy, but it's effective and absolutely necessary in today's world.

Here's a hint, though; at first, and until such time as your community reputation is virtually unassailable, keep your guns and camo out of the equation. Absolutely, positively do not let yourself or your unit appear "scary". You're attempting to win hearts, not frighten people into slamming their doors. And like it or not, guns scare people (thanks, Don Lemon). Rough-looking men in tac gear with those "fully semi-automatic hundred-round assault rifle killing machines of ultimate death" will not do your cause any favors, unless you're setting up a table at a gun show. Then you can pull out pics and video from your last drill or training session...gun guys will eat that up like Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor at a DeWalt clearance event. But that's the only kind of place your military pictures belong. We're trying to win Grandma's heart, not give her a heart attack.

There's much more to this subject, particularly with social media...but I'll cover that in a "PROPAGANDA PART TWO" post later on. The biggest takeaway from this post is this; keep an ironclad lock on your public image. Protect it at all costs, project the image you want shared whenever possible, keep your guys in line (and if they won't fall in line, get rid of them), and take nothing newsworthy for granted. Our enemies are vast in number, incredibly resourceful, mean as a weasel with a toothache, and dangerous. Don't give them any more tools to work with than they already have. And don't take your public (community) image for granted, either. Get out there and self-promote. And remember Mr. Roarke's constant reminder--"Smiles, everyone! SMILES!"  You're friendly, not scary. You're there to help, not hurt. You're nice, not mean. Given the opportunity, CNN will still make you the Devil incarnate--but if your neighbors know better, it won't matter much what CNN says. So make your neighbors know better.

Tomorrow's topic is called "Did I Shave My Legs For THIS?"

All very true. The success of the 3perceners and others is very much due to how and Who they recruit as well as how others see them.  It really starts with how the leadership handles problem ppl and how they deal with the public. There should be someone specification that handles the public relations as it relates to the media.

Where I work there is only 1 yes one person allowed to take questions from the media.

prevents lots of problems.

Sowing goodwill in the community..yes. Controlling the narrative in the local media..there is a big problem with that. Many community newspapers are owned by the CNN's, MSNBC's and other corporate conglomerates. Here in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal Constitution ( a leftist rag) has bought up many of the local papers. What we need is to use alternative online media that respects freedom of speech and diversity of thought (not diversity of outward appearance, but uniformity of thought) like parler, gab (twitter alternatives), Mewe ( facebook alternative) and local sites that are similar to that. Forget traditional media ,they are the enemy.

I agree with you, except that the area I'm originally from still has the same family-owned hometown paper that has existed there for more than a hundred years. Even where I live now, with it's leftist rag of a local paper, will still accept news releases and run them pretty much verbatim. You have to judge your individual area and make allowances for the situation you face. If your local paper is going to give you a hard time no matter what you do, bypass them the way you would CNN. If they're friendly, or at least cooperative, use that tool.

It's all about being smart. Certainly, smarter than our enemies. And they look up to AOC, so how smart can they be, really?  😆
