let me preface that I dont have a license, yet... but I do still have a concept the I see more & more people thinking about. (I'm a reffrence guy so get ready for some vids.)

The concept I see is how to integrate maps, comms, & some data sharing offline with minimal bulk. Many that are looking into a convoy, linking up with other groups, group planning, & a stationary (or mobile) HQ should be looking to link these puzzle pieces together.

what would cover all of this? ATAK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXuQERL_e8M this vid breaks down what that is, why we dont have it, & the parameters for the ability we need.

while looking into convoys concepts I found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC-upXJyVvg  this is where I was introduced to HAM radio heads.

from this I've found 2 that may do most of what I'm looking for, but I need help on specs for these. frankly, im out of my depth.

The 2 I've looked at so far are;

Yaesu FTM-400DR & Icom ID-5100A

The pros & cons so far;

both are user friendly, touch screen, dual band monitoring, both can bluetooth to a device to work with map & GPS.

Yaesu is smaller, in color, screen seems to respond a bit faster, and can send & receive on APRS (i think its called) basically it can let you know where everyone in the group is. The mounting could be better & I think you have to get an another part to make it bluetooth capable.

Icom is mono colored (but that may make it easier in low light), has an easy mounting system, has a bigger screen & foot print, & has Dstar which (if around a compatible tower) lets your radio (with use of internet) talk anywhere around the world (which is cool, but does your group even need that).

I'm leaning toward the Yaesu. But like I said, I'm out of my depth here. (will I have to get another HAM to do HF bands like this guy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH4ivIHOUNs , if so how is his setup?)

Ok, now for the offline aspect. I cam across this gym https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TY6m6fS8bxU and was curious if it could be integrated into the above, & what is its potential?

The HAM heads above have the ability to bluetooth with android. so does that mean I can take advantage of the OsmAnd app (as shown in the 1st vid link) and go completely offline while integrating it to the above?

could all these boil down to the HAM head, meshtastic device, & a android tablet/device so as to make this available for our purposes?

The thing that would have me leery of this is the fact it's pretty active in transmitting updates. That opens you up to DF'ing unless you can choke back the transmission time and how frequently it keys up. In the .mil on a freq hopping/spread spectrum radio that is less of a risk.

AFAIK the civ version of ATAK does not support plugins, but that could have changed.

yea its pretty nutted. thats why the guy just uses it as a reference.

The fact that is transmits updates frequently, increasing your RF signature.

To begin with you don't want maps or plans going over the air, more so on Ham radio, encryption is a rule violation on ham frequencies.

Sending that type of information over the air is akin to handing out brochures detailing your operations.

there are already other devices that use ham for a text signal that are encoded, & if that time comes im not too worried about the gov.

sending location points (not the map itself) is less of an issue I feel because you are giving away your position every time you key up. ive seen people who are less than intermediate in skill do this.

depending on the subject matter, sometimes communication is more important than opsec.

good points though, thank ya

Yes they are encoded with well known CODECS, however what is needed is encryption.

When it comes to encryption It's not the government you need to worry about, they have ways to crack most any code, what you want to mask your data from is folks like ANTIFA, because they will be trying to monitor what you are up to, and using known CODECS is useless for any form of security.
