Biased media nothing new

Recommended Posts

Mr. Buchanan,

I’m 33, and I’ve followed your commentary since I was a teenager, but I have to tell you, I take issue with your last piece. I don’t disagree with you on your facts, but to say it’s something new? No, this is nothing new.

I’ve committed myself over the past few years to learning our history. I can tell you from my study on early American history, the press was no less kind to their adversaries then than they are today. It’s not new. Different newspapers and outlets back then were also effective adjuncts to whichever party, administration, or opposition. The only difference now is the speed at which information (and misinformation) can be disseminated.

Claiming the system is “rigged” in some new way undermines our system of self-government. Thank God we have a conservative and liberal media. I’m glad they spar, and I’m glad they provide a counterpoint of view to the other. I’m sure you don’t need to re-read it, but think about Federalist No. 10, at least.

Your column makes sense only when you stand viewing history from the shallows. When you look deeper into our history, most observers would say this isn’t new.

I don’t always agree with you, but I think you’ve got a history of being well reasoned and well sourced. This one is shallow, and serves a political agenda. This kind of commentary feeds the devolving nature of our politics, and as Republicans, it’s an example of why our party right now is very deservedly turning into an ash heap. It’s my generation that’s going to have to re-establish our conservative values and governing majority that your generation is so quickly squandering.

God bless you, our families and our country. I may disagree with you on this one, but I do appreciate you. I hope you’ll not take my words as antagonistic, but only as passionate as your own.
