Our seething rage

Pat Buchanan’s commentary arguably ends on a note of resignation. Buchanan writes that, in the event Clinton, Ryan and McConnell head the government in 2017, the “deplorables” will, in his words, “have to accept the new regime.” In ordinary times, that might be case, but these are not ordinary times.

 

Buchanan underestimates the anger and vexation, if not rage, seething within half the citizenry who, in the spirit of Howard Beale, “are mad as hell and won’t take it anymore.” Their government of career leeches and elitist snakes is dead set against them. It forces ever more taxes and burdensome regulations upon them and, no matter who they elect, is deaf to their demands for systemic change and reform.

 

In discerning the true temper of the nation, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke may be a better diagnostician than Buchanan.
