Two Men Arrested While Brandishing Guns In CA Megachurch. They Also Had Firearms

Recommended Posts

Two men were arrested in an Irvine, CA megachurch yesterday after a brief standoff with police. The two men were reportedly armed, but that’s not where this case gets kind of bizarre. Oh no, not by a long shot.

From CBS Los Angeles:

Two naked men with rifles were arrested inside Greg Laurie’s megachurch in Irvine Wednesday night.

As KCAL9/CBS2’s Stacey Butler reports, SWAT teams with rifles trained on the suspects put handcuffs on them and walked them out without any clothing.

Laurie’s Harvest Church is a Christian evangelical church. He is a megapastor who runs the Harvest Crusade in Anaheim every year, which thousands attend. He just held the last crusade at Angel Stadium a week and a half ago.

Video of the new report sheds no additional light on just what the heck was going on. However, it does appear that the two men were clothed when they entered the building, though both were nude when they exited and were placed in police custody.

What we do know is that a security guard saw the two men enter the church with rifles about 7:30 Wednesday night and notified police. The two men allegedly barricaded themselves in, holding off law enforcement for two hours according to officials. After a standoff with police, the two men eventually surrendered, leading to a peaceful, if bizarre, outcome.

Thinking back to my upbringing, all I can do is remember my father saying, “That’s not your gun, that’s a rifle. One is for fighting, one is for fun.” I was young enough when I first heard it that I didn’t get it, though eventually I was educated in its meaning, which ran through my head when I heard this story. Maybe the two men got confused and figured nudity would have them covered either way?

On a serious note, I’m glad to see that there was a peaceful ending. While I wouldn’t shed a tear for the two possibly nudism extremists, there’s always a risk to law enforcement in a situation like that. Police have to be restrained and measured in their actions while criminals who have no interest in going to prison don’t. The bad guys get to be aggressive and decisive. Anyone who has read Jeff Cooper knows those two things can make a huge difference.

Luckily, everyone got to go home at the end of the day. Police got to go to their families, and the two men have an opportunity to meet that someone special in jail. We all know how those jailhouse romances go, and I’m not one to judge. I can only imagine their arrival sans clothing is bound to raise a few eyebrows and possibly make them the belle of the ball.

Might just be a win for everyone.
