Anti-Gun Groups Start Eating Their Own

It seems the American political left has a track record of expecting complete obedience from its side. Anyone who deviates from that path is blasted and attacked almost immediately, and, from the outside, it tends to look particularly vicious. It’s like leftists tend to save all their worst vitriol for other leftists who disagree with them.

It’s things like that which make it amusing to watch the left turn on itself from time to time.

The Parkland shooting has created the opportunity for a lot of open dialogue about gun control, and although it is amazing that many students are holding legislators accountable for change, it cannot be ignored that black youth have not received the same love from the public in return.

Unfortunately, we live in a society where black lives, especially young black lives, are not seen as valuable as white lives. Being black in America and seeing headlines like, “Parkland student calls March for Our Lives: the ‘birth of a revolution,’” it’s impossible to not feel slighted because black Americans have been fighting this fight for years, from Mike Brown in 2014 to Rodney King in 1992 and even farther back.

Gun control has always been a problem, but it hurts to know that it hasn’t been seen as a problem until white lives were affected by the lack of gun control.

Many black students who were involved, as well, have stated that they feel as though their voices were not being heard.

According to CNN, Parkland student Tyah-Amoy Roberts told reporters, “The Black Lives Matter movement has been addressing [gun violence] since the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012, yet we have never seen this kind of support for our cause, and we surely do not feel the lives or voices of minorities are valued as much as those of our white counterpart.”

Do you want to know the kicker? They might have a point.

I’m not saying I agree with them, but hear me out.

In the minds of the left, guns were the problem with Trayvon Martin’s death. Black Lives Matter sprung up as a result. They made some waves but ultimately accomplished nothing.

Then a bunch of mostly white kids gets killed, and now the left is rallying to their cause? Now the left is ready to run head-on into guns?

I’m sorry, but I do see where they’re coming from.

Meanwhile, we on this side of the gun debate argue that the best way for law-abiding people of color to protect themselves is to be armed. We may disagree about Trayvon Martin being murdered, of course, but we still believe guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens – regardless of race, gender, class or creed – result in lives saved.

Not that anyone in Black Lives Matter seems to care. They’re working hard to disarm their communities, making them even more likely to become victims.

That’s on them.

In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy watching these two groups battle each other to the bitter end.
