Should Christians Really "Turn the other cheek," When Attacked?

Recommended Posts

Great video. Never saw this channel before.

Most people will say that because Jesus did not defend himself against the Romans, we should not defend ourselves against the State or others either.

I have always thought that Jesus had a mission and because he had to be the final lamb whose blood was shed for our sins, he would not have fought, as neither a lamb would fight.

"Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."  II Timothy 2 : 15

In the Bible are literal truths and figurative truths.  There are laws that are set out and then there are examples that show how the laws of God apply.

In Genesis chapter 14 we learn of how Abraham (then called Abram)  used a militia against an invading army that had taken his nephew, Lot, captive.

In the 25th chapter of Numbers, we learn of Phineas who took a javelin and killed an Israelite and a Midianite woman who had been joined together contrary to God's law.  For his act, God saved the Israelites from an AIDS like plague.

The question of whether we are to turn the cheek in every instance always depends upon the circumstances and the context.  A personal slight does not merit an automatic reaction.  A drunk in a bar calls somebody names.  That does not justify a fight.  In the New Testament, Jesus went into the Temple and beat the beans out of the moneychangers.  He flipped over tables using  a scourge (a weapon) to drive home a point (See John chapter 2)

If the founding fathers had not rightly divided the word of God, the misinterpretation of Romans 13 would have prevented us from becoming a Republic - one nation under God.
